Pricing: Goffin’s Cockatoos are moderately priced. While the Goffin’s Cockatoo may not be as loud as some of the larger Cockatoos, they are still not apartment pets. Loudness: Cockatoos are among the loudest of the parrot species, so if you’re sensitive to noise we would suggest looking into other types of parrots. And, Goffins are most likely the best escape artists of all parrots, and the fastest runners of all of the cockatoos. Goffin’s Cockatoos will typically develop a small vocabulary of 5 or 6 of their favorite words and phrases. They can learn to speak, but are often difficult to understand. For this reason, we recommend a large variety of toys and plenty of supervision during play time. Anything and everything is a toy to them – especially if you don’t want them to have it. They are extremely playful and acrobatic. If you are unable to devote at least 3 hours of quality time to your parrot each day, then a Goffins Cockatoo is not for you. Although the Goffin’s Cockatoo is slightly more independent than other Cockatoos, they still need a lot of attention. Arguably, these parrots are among the most affectionate animals on the planet! This is wonderful at first, but they quickly become like needy two year olds, craving constant attention and companionship. Origin: Indonesia (Specifically, the Tanimbar Islands) Trainability: Domestic hand-fed babies make excellent pets for dedicated caregivers. The darker the iris, the more likely it is to be male. After they have reached maturity (typically around 5 years of age) the females will retain a brown iris, while the males will turn almost black. Sexing: The sexes differ only in eye color, though all juvenile birds will appear to be female. However, their crest is significantly smaller than that of other Cockatoos, and resembles a shark’s fin rather than a large headdress, and smaller and more round than the crest of a Ducorps Cockatoo. Like other Cockatoos, they have a crest which will pop up when they are startled or excited. Almost all Goffin’s Cockatoos have a pink or salmon-colored patch near their cheeks, which gives them the appearance of blushing. The underside of their wings, crest, and tail is yellow. Most have a pink tint to them, though many are entirely white. The triton cockatoo can be a pricey bird to acquire, with its price ranging from $1,500 to $3,000.These are the smallest Cockatoos in the pet bird trade. Regular visits to a veterinarian usually keep these health issues at bay. Triton cockatoos may suffer from respiratory problems, intestinal issues like inflammation and coccidiosis, psittacine beak and feather disease. Clip the feathers just enough to make sure they glide to the ground, and not fall to it. Clip the feathers as well to ensure your cockatoo does not fly away through an open window. The nails and beak should be clipped at regular intervals or else they’d get too large, and may cause injury to the owner. Replace the chewed up toys from time to time as well. A complete disinfection of the cage needs to be carried out every other month. The water and food dishes in the cage need to be replaced daily with clean ones. Make sure that they stay away from chocolate and avocado, as both of those are toxic for parrots. Tritons should get a quality seed mix, fruits, vegetables and a pelleted diet. Their raucous calls usually are at their peak during dawn and dusk, as those are the times in the wild when they make noise to get others of the flock together (at dawn) and to return to their nests (during dusk). They also tend to get overly attached to one person, which might lead to aggressive behavior towards others. They can also be rather loud, so you’d either need to place them in a sound-proofed room or have very considerate neighbors. Jovial, fun-loving and gregarious, they can become a handful because of their constant craving for their owner’s attention. These birds are absolute clowns when it comes to personality. They thrive in a wide range of temperatures but ideally keep them in an area with a moderate room temperature. You must also provide plenty of chewable toys as these birds are rather prone to chewing. There should be perches for the bird to sit and swing on. A sturdy cage with ample room is what is required for a triton cockatoo as they are excellent escape artists and can easily bite open flimsy cages with their strong beaks.
